Karate Training Introduction
Karate training can be broken down into three key areas: Kata, Kihon & Kumite which together make up the core skills required to progress in karate. All three disciplines are practiced by every grade and students must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in all of them in order to pass their gradings.
Basic Technique (Kihon)
Kihon
is the practice of the fundamental blocking, punching ,kicking and
striking techniques of karate in which students form lines and advance
up and down the training hall (Dojo). For higher grades this is
normally followed by more complex and demanding combinations which
comprise of two or more basic techniques performed as a sequence. For
more detailed information on Kihon see our Kihon Page.
Forms (Kata)

Sparing (Kumite)
In Kihon
one learns basic techniques. In Kata one learns how to apply the
techniques in a combat situation against imagery opponents. In Kumite
one applies them with a sparing partner .The principles of Kihon
still apply meaning that karateka(student of karate) must use proper karate techniques ,
demonstrate correct speed & power and above all exercise good
control.
There are three different types of Kumite starting with basic three or five step sparing going up to free sparing depending on the grade of student. For more details on Kumite see our Kumite Page
