Kumite

Basic 5 or 3 Step Sparing (Gohon or Sanbon Kumite)

This is a simple pre arranged attack, block and counter exercise for beginners and is designed to develop basic technique and body co-ordination when attacking and blocking. This consists of sets of predetermined attacks and blocks performed in pairs to enable both students to practice both attacking and blocking equally.
This type of Kumite is used for the first three grades and is used to test the students understanding of the co-ordination between stepping and hand techniques with an emphasis on correct technique, stances                                  and distancing.

Basic 1 Step and Semi Free 1 Step Sparing (Kihon Ippon & Jiyu Ippon Kumite)

In Kihon one learns basic techniques. In Kata one learns how to apply the techniques in a prearranged combat situation against imaginary opponents. In basic one step Kumite one applies these techniques with a sparing partner. The principles of Kihon still apply meaning that the karateka must apply correct karate techniques, demonstrate correct speed, power and timing and above all exercise good control.
Jiyu Ippon Kumite has the same format as basic one step sparing except the student who is attacking  are permitted to execute the attack from free fighting stance and the defending student stands in Shizen -tai (natural position) and is allowed to use any block and counter of their choice.

Free Sparing (Jiyu Kumite)

In free sparing there are no prearranged attacks or blocks and the partners are permitted to make full use of their technical and physical abilities but all  techniques must be controlled as making actual contact is strictly forbidden.
This type of Kumite has a strong appeal perhaps because it is performed in earnest .However an inexperienced student attracted by knowing very little will end up using their arms mechanically ,and the Kumite will look like two fighting cocks or become a free for all. When this happens the unique characteristic of Karate-do (destroying the enemy with one powerful blow)is lost. Furthermore  it is a violation of the rules of Karate-do. For this reason students must learn and perfect all the preceding types of Kumite before being permitted to engage in Jiyu Kumite.
